Leeds United: BBC journalist provides update Nottingham Forest Bridcutt ‘interest’

Reports coming through yesterday, from sources such as the Nottingham Post, said that Nottingham Forest were interested in signing former Leeds United captain Liam Bridcutt.

The article in question said that Forest were “exploring whether deal for 28-year-old can be struck with Elland Road club”, Bridcutt having only this year left on his contract. Leeds United are blessed with midfield players, meaning that Bridcutt has found himself out of new boss Thomas Christiansen’s plans.

Leeds seem to have carried over former boss Garry Monk’s 4-2-3-1 formation from last season, with Christiansen favouring pairings such as Ireland international Eunan O’Kane and youngster Kalvin Phillips. The upshot of this is that Bridcutt has found himself something of a persona non grata at Elland Road, failing to make any of the Sky Bet Championship match day squads and only featuring for 32 minutes in the Carabao Cup win against Port Vale.

Bridcutt signed on a permanent deal for Leeds in August 2016, arriving from Sunderland after a successful loan during the 2015/16 Sky Championship campaign. The Scotland international made 25 appearances for the Whites during last season’s campaign, laying on two assists.

Whilst the interest from yesterday was somewhat hypothetical, shorouded in ‘maybes’ and ‘possibles’, BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope (tweet – below) adds a more clear degree of certainty to the goings on.

Leeds United head coach Christiansen has gone on record as saying that he still sees a future for Bridcutt at Leeds. Speaking on Bridcutt failing to make the squad for the season’s opener against Bolton, a 3-2 Leeds United win, Christiansen said: “I had a talk to him and of course he was disappointed that he wasn’t in the squad but I said to him that the season is long and he will have his time, his opportunity.”

Despite this affirmation from the Leeds United boss, it is perhaps a little inconceivable that former Chelsea youngster Bridcutt will want to see out his final year at Elland Road as a squad/bit part player. Furthermore, with only a year left on his contract, transfer to another Sky Bet Championship club may well be an option that Leeds United will explore.
