Former Boro midfielder critical of language barrier on Teesside

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon has claimed that poor communication between the English and foreign players at the club last season contributed heavily to their immediate relegation from the English Premier League according to the Boro Gazette.

Boro lasted just one season back in the top flight and failure to create chances and score goals ultimately contributed towards their demise.

Dutch midfielder de Roon joined Middlesbrough from Atalanta last summer but stayed on Teesside for just 11 months before securing his return to the Italian club for an undisclosed fee last week.

According to media reports in the player’s homeland, it has been reported that the 26-year-old has claimed that their was a huge language barrier in the Boro squad last season which created a significant split in the group.

The Boro squad was very much a multi-national squad last term with no less than 18 different overseas nationalities having represented the club at some point throughout the campaign.

In attack, Boro fielded players from nations such as Spain, Denmark, Benin and Mali and the overall goal return from the English Premier League fixtures was exceptionally poor.

Dutch midfielder de Roon made 36 appearances for the Teessiders in all competitions and the player netted five goals for the club.
