Curtis Nelson, Leeds reportedly interested in Oxford United defender

Leeds reportedly interested in Oxford United defender

According to a report from the Football Insider, Leeds United are lining up a move for Oxford United defender and club captain Curtis Nelson.

It’s no secret that the Yorkshire giants have been in need of a centre back all summer. Hero from last season Kyle Bartley returned to parent club Swansea, meaning additions needed to be made, and youngster Matthew Pennington was brought in on loan from Premier League side Everton.

However, he suffered an ankle injury in the opening game of the season against Bolton Wanderers, after an impressive start to his loan spell, which further heightened the need for a central defender.

Thankfully for Leeds fans, cult hero Pontus Jansson returned from his two match ban to feature in the 0-0 draw against Preston North End, but there are still rumours that Leeds are looking to bring in another defender before the window closes, and it appears Oxford United captain Curtis Nelson is on the radar according to a Football Insider report.

The 24-year-old started his career at the youth set up at Stoke City, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle, where he eventually made the step up to the senior team.

He made 213 appearances for ‘The Pilgrims’ scoring two, and was a real fan favourite at the club, before he signed for current club Oxford United in June of last year.

Last season the Englishman made 43 appearances in all competitions scoring three goals, and has featured in all three of the club’s games so far this season.

Nelson is strong, physically imposing and great in the air, and would be a solid signing for Leeds if it were to happen, as they try to go one better than last season and make the play-offs.
