Bolton Wanderers fight back to prevent upset against Crewe Alexandra

Bolton Wanderers were able to come back from behind to beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 to prevent a potential upset in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.

Bolton performed well but ultimately were disappointed when they lost 3-2 to Leeds United on the opening day of the season and so hoped this Carabao Cup game would be their first win of the season. Crewe as well couldn’t win on the opening day, instead being forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Mansfield Town.

But while Bolton would have thought they were the favourites to win this game, they were certainly given a fright. Late on in the second half, Crewe sent a cross in and Chris Porter followed up his great performance in the first game of the season with a goal here as he headed in at the far post.

There was a real worry that Bolton would end up crashing out of the Carabao Cup to a Sky Bet League Two team, but they showed resolve to fight back and get the win. Firstly, Adam Armstrong was able to get an equalise when he finished from close range after a good Will Buckley cross. The good interplay between two new signings was sure to make head coach Phil Parkinson happy. And then Bolton got the winner when Derik Osede got his first goal for Bolton by heading in a Filipe Morais free kick.

Bolton now get the chance to play in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup though have to tend with Millwall on Saturday before that. After being knocked out of the cup, Crewe will have to get back to league action on Saturday with a match against Newport County.
