Boro midfielder on the verge of securing Serie A return

Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk has confirmed that Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon is almost certain to leave the club before the closure of the current transfer window according to the Gazette Live.

The 26-year-old Zwijndrecht born midfield ace has spent just over 12 months at The Riverside Stadium after joining the Teessiders from Italian club Atalanta last summer in a reported £8.8 million deal.

De Roon’s former club have been locked in talks to re-sign the player with Boro in recent weeks and it has now been revealed that a deal for the midfielder is close.

Atalanta are understood to be willing to pay around £12 million to re-sign de Roon and that deal is almost certain to be concluded before the current transfer window closes at the end of the month.

De Roon has made 37 appearances for Middlesbrough in all competitions and has scored five goals. The player was selected to represent Boro in their 1-0 opening day defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday despite being linked with a move away from The Riverside Stadium.

The midfielder started his career in his homeland with Sparta Rotterdam before joining Heerenveen. De Roon made over a century of appearances for The Super Frisians before a season-long spell in Italy with Atalanta.
