Aston Villa just about managed to hold off Colchester United after beating them 2-1 to progress into the next round of the Carabao Cup.
The Villains drew their opening game of the season with Hull City and would be looking to use this game to kickstart their season proper. Colchester on the other hand had a tough start to the year after losing 3-1 to Accrington Stanley and wanted to put in a good performance to boost their confidence.
The game was always going to be tough for both sides as torrential rain gave made everything more difficult. But Villa didn’t let the rain get them down as they took the lead through an early goal. Perhaps the weather didn’t help Colchester goalkeeper Sam Walker as he fumbled a low cross and Scott Hogan was there to tap in and score the opener. Considering many thought he was disappointing after making a big money move in the January transfer window, this is a great way for Hogan to start the season.
And Villa would get the second and what would be the eventual winner not long after. Once again, the danger came from the wing as Albert Adomah put in a cross while Frankie Kent was able to get to the ball first, he only succeeded in putting the ball into his own goal Kent did make up for it later on when he was able to score when a cleared corner fell to him, it wouldn’t be enough.
Aston Villa will now progress into the Second Round of the Carabao Cup though they have a tough fixture against Cardiff City next. Now that they are out of the cup, Colchester will now look ahead to their match against Stevenage.
