Rochdale book passage into next round of Carabao Cup thanks to Callum Camps stunner

Rochdale have progressed into the Second Round of the Carabao Cup after a stunner from Callum Camps was able to get them a 1-0 win over Mansfield Town.

The Dale suffered a poor start to the season when they lost 2-0 to Portsmouth on opening day and with them being a league higher than Sky Bet League Two side Mansfield, they were hoping that this could be the game to kickstart their season. Mansfield on the other hand drew 2-2 with Crewe Alexandra on the opening day and would be hoping to cause an upset.

But while Mansfield will have been very disappointed to concede, even they had to admire the goal that was scored. After the Stags were able to clear a corner, the ball landed perfectly at Camps’ feet. He was then able to hit the ball right into the top corner, a strike worthy of the Carabao Cup final never mind the first round of the competition.

Mansfield did look to fight back and get an equaliser though and they were given the perfect opportunity. The Nottinghamshire club got a penalty when Niall Canavan tripped Danny Rose in the box with just a few minutes to go. Many expected Rose to force the game into extra time when he stepped up the spot, but Josh Lillis became the hero of the day when he saved the penalty with his legs.

Rochdale will now progress into the Second Round of the Carabao Cup but will be looking to Saturday’s match Scunthorpe United first. Mansfield are now out of the competition and will hope to bounce back and get their first win of the season in Saturday’s match against Forest Green Rovers.
