Coventry striker signs for former Premier League champions

Premier League side Leicester City have signed George Thomas from Coventry for an undisclosed fee.

Thomas, a highly rated player for the Sky Blues, scored nine times in 36 appearances last term, including the winner as his side won the EFL Trophy at Wembley. The 20-year-old can play as either a striker or in midfield and ended last season as the club’s top-scorer with seven goals as the Sky Blues were relegated to League Two.

Having made his debut in 2014 under Steven Pressley, Thomas has gone on to make 53 appearances for the Sky Blues.

The Coventry fan-favourite also has experience on the international stage having represented Wales at under-17, under-19 and under-20 level. His impressive performances at this summer’s Toulon Tournament saw the young midfielder named as part of the Toulon Tournament best XI.

Speaking after signing for his hometown club, Thomas said: “I’m buzzing, I’m delighted to get it over the line finally and I’m looking forward to the season coming and seeing what I can do.

“It’s my hometown, I only live 10-15 minutes away in Wigston. It’s always good to play for your hometown team so hopefully I can push on from here.

“I’ve played 50 odd games at professional level so maybe I have got that head start over other 20-year-olds in the country,” he added. “Hopefully I can use that experience to get into the first team here.

“The aim is to play first team football and try and help the Club.

“That’s the aim, to try and hit the ground running.”
