Chris Wilder still wants more players despite opening day win

Sheffield United head coach Chris Wilder has told the Sheffield Star that he wants to sign more players despite a winning start to life in the Sky Bet Championship.

Any doubts that the Blades would struggle to life back in the Championship were dismissed yesterday as they beat Brentford 1-0 on their return to the league after a six-year exile. While they were put under pressure at times by one of the teams established in the league, they were eventually able to win out when club captain Billy Sharp headed in a cross from Leon Clarke just a few minutes before the end of the first half.

But even though United did get a win on their opening day, their head coach Chris Wilder doesn’t think they are finished improving their squad. He believes that if the team does want to be competitive in this league and not end up involved in a relegation battle, they need to sign more players and he will be looking to do exactly that before the end of the transfer window.

He said: “We are still short in a few positions,”

“I’ve made that clear to the owners. I’m ambitious, I don’t just want to hang about. I will always be pushing to try and make us better.”

“We’re pleased with what we’ve done in the market so far” –

“I’ve every confidence in these lads but I want them to be pushed. I’m loyal but not sentimental.”

Sheffield United will hope to continue their momentum when they face Walsall in the Carabao Cup on the 9th August.
