Aston Villa

Why this Premier League winger would be a perfect fit for Aston Villa

According to a report from Wales Online Qatari outfit Al-Rayyan are keen on signing Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero, but in my opinion, Aston Villa should look at the attacker as a potential signing this summer too.

The Ecuadorian international, who has 63 caps for his national team, scoring ten goals, has a wealth of pace and flare, and could really thrive in the Championship if he were to move to Villa Park.

Montero started his career at Emelec in his homeland of Ecuador, where progressed through the youth ranks.

He eventually made the step up to the first team in 2007, scoring two goals in 22 appearances before moving to Independiente, and then had a loan spell at Dorados, before finding himself at Spanish giants Villarreal.

He played for the B team for a year, where he scored ten goals in 32 appearances, which earned him a place in the first team the following year. However, he made just nine appearances in two years, and was loaned out to Levante, where he made 11 appearances and Betis, where he netted one goal in 32 appearances, before signing for Morelia in Mexico on a permanent basis.

The diminutive 27-year-old enjoyed his time in Mexico, scoring ten in 63 appearances across two years, and eventually found himself in Wales, with Premier League side Swansea City, where he has really made his name.

The Swansea number 20 has brought a wealth of pace and attacking prowess to the ranks at the Liberty Stadium, but has struggled for goals, netting just two during his time in Wales, and has been scrutinised in the past for not having enough conviction in the final third.

However, there is no doubt it would be a fantastic signing for Aston Villa as they look to return to the Premier League this campaign, and with the Ecuadorian slightly out of favour in Wales, having featured just 14 times in all competitions last season, he could well be wearing the ‘claret and blue’ of Aston Villa this season if the decide to show their interest.
