Sunderland hope to beat Tigers to sign keeper

Sky Bet Championship new boys Sunderland are hoping to conclude a deal for trialist goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter this week according to the Sunderland Echo.

The 30-year-old Amsterdam born stopper has spent pre-season with The Black Cats and has impressed new Sunderland boss Simon Grayson enough to be offered a deal.

It has been reported that Hull City would also like to sign the keeper while Burnley are monitoring the situation however it is Sunderland who expect to conclude a deal for the player.

Ruiter started his career in his homeland with Dutch second tier outfit FC Volendam. The player made 68 appearances for The Other Orange but could not help the club reach the Eredivisie despite his best efforts.

In summer 2012, the keeper joined top flight outfit FC Utrecht upon the expiry of his contract at the Kras Stadion and the player went on to become a fans’ favourite at the Stadion Galgenwaard. Ruiter made 157 appearances for FC Utrecht while he has experienced playing in the UEFA Europa League with the club.

Injury saw the experienced stopper lose his place in the side last term and Ruiter was not offered a new deal by FC Utrecht boss Erik ten Hag this summer.

The keeper still has plenty to offer and it looks highly likely that he will soon be playing in the Sky Bet Championship.
