Sunderland open talks with Aston Villa striker

Sunderland have opened talks with Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack as they look to sign him on loan according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The 30-year-old striker was one of Aston Villa’s marquee signings last summer but he has had a torrid time since heading to Villa Park. He struggled to replicate the form he had at Leeds United and Fulham that made him into one of the most hotly tracked players in the Sky Bet Championship and things got worse when Steve Bruce became the head coach. He fell out with the boss when he allegedly failed to show up for training, with the reported excuse being that the gates to his house being broken.

This led to McCormack going out on loan to Nottingham Forest for the second half of last season though he even struggled when he headed there. That means a return to the City Ground is unlikely but his form was so good in previous years that teams still believe that in the right environment, he can hit that form once again and return to being one of the most prolific strikers in the league.

And so Sunderland are now in discussions to sign McCormack on loan for the rest of the season. They lost their best striker Jermaine Defoe when they were relegated from the Premier League and need a new forward to score the goals that will get them back to the top tier. They are already close to wrapping up a deal for Lewis Grabban from Bournemouth and now they could have another great striker on their books should they do the same for McCormack.
