Leeds United striker to wait and see – many clubs interested

It took SEK15 million (£1.3 million) to take top-scoring Allsvenskan striker Marcus Antonsson from Kalmar to Leeds United, now there’s talk he may be on the brink of a return to his native Sweden.

The signing of Marcus Antonsson from Swedish Allsvenskan side Kalmar FF was something of a surprise move for Whites fans to take, a definite signing from left-field as it were.

Antonsson arrived at Elland Road and Leeds United with the Swedish league programme entering a mid-term break and he arrived with the billing of the then top scorer in the Allsvenskan with a return of 10 goals across 12 appearances. One thing was for sure, he knew where the goal was.

However, Antonsson endured a tough first season at Elland Road, Leeds’ attack driven by the 27 league goals of Chris Wood in Garry Monk’s 4-2-3-1 formation. The £1.3 million Swede managed just 16 appearances (six starts) for the Whites, 16 appearances that brought just the single Championship goal in the victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Now Swedish media publication Fotboll Direkt that “after a tough season” at Elland Road, “all the [Swedish] Premier Division clubs are interested” in bringing the former Kalmar player back to Sweden.

Fotboll Direkt go on to say that two clubs in particular, Malmö FF and AIK, have actually gone so far as to have contacted Leeds to make “inquiries about the player’s availability.” They also mention that IFK Norrkoping Hammarby, IFK Gothengurg and Antonsson’s old club Kalmar are following Antonsson’s circumstances at Leeds with some diligence.

There is no indication that Antonsson is on his way out of Elland Road, although there has been much change under the new coaching regime of Thomas Christiansen. Many players have been brought in, a lot of them able to play in forward positions, this meaning that Swedish striker Antonsson could be pushed even further down the Elland Road pecking order.

Fotboll Direkt say that their sources indicate that Antonsson will “wait and see” how the new regime views his role. Should he receive news that he isn’t part of Christiansen’s plans for next season, “the greatest likelihood” will be a return to Sweden.

Leeds United fans, should he stay or should he go? Is Antonsson an asset at Elland Road or not? Let us know (below).
