Aston Villa midfielder subject to interest from Championship rivals

Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner is subject to interest from multiple unnamed Championship clubs according to HITC Sport, after the arrival of experienced Stoke City Glenn Whelan pushed the long-shot specialist even further down the pecking order at Villa Park.

The 25-year-old midfielder has been struggling for game time at Villa Park in recent seasons, with successive managers not fancying the academy product as a major part of their plans.

Since making his Villa debut back in the 2011/12 Premier League season, Gardner has made just 45 appearances for The Villains, albeit 27 of those coming last season, however, it appears that Steve Bruce will be the next Villa manager to leave him out of their plans, having left Gardner off the club’s pre-season tour this summer.

After having endured 5 separate loan spells, including two most recent spells with Championship rivals Nottingham Forest, it seems like it’s crunch time for Gardner’s Aston Villa career, and the former Sheffield Wednesday and Brighton loanee is unlikely to want to leave on loan once more.

At 25 years of age, Gardner needs to be playing regular first team football at this point in his career and the only realistic way he can rebuild his career from here is to leave Villa Park on a permanent basis.

Last January Nottingham Forest tried to bring the combative midfielder back for a third spell on a permanent basis, but Villa chose to keep him at the club. However, multiple Championship sides are reportedly watching the 25-year-old, making it less and less likely he’ll remain at Villa Park past the summer.
