Released Blackburn Rovers striker closing in on Hibs return

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Anthony Stokes is understood to be likely to re-join former club Hibernian following his release by the Ewood Park outfit according to the Edinburgh Evening News.

The 28-year-old Dublin born hotshot endured a miserable 12 months with Rovers and the player has come to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with the Sky Bet League One club.

Former club Hibernian have hoped to re-sign the striker for several months and it has now been reported that Stokes’ agent is currently discussing a potential deal with the Scottish Premiership new boys.

Stokes won the Scottish Cup with Hibs during a half-season loan spell with the club during the 2015/2016 campaign. The player netted two goals against Rangers in the Final as Hibernian went on to lift the famous trophy for the first time in 114 years courtesy of a 3-2 success at Hampden Park.

The striker left parent club Celtic at the end of his contract 12 months ago and Stokes managed 14 appearances during a miserable spell with Blackburn Rovers in which the player netted just four goals.

Hibs boss Neil Lennon is thought to be desperate to take the player back to Easter Road and after months of waiting to land Stokes it now looks as though the Northern Irishman is closing in on his man.
