Obita, Birmingham City, Middlesbrough and Hull in chase to sign Reading defender

Birmingham City, Middlesbrough and Hull in chase to sign Reading defender

Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, Hull City and Fulham are all in the chase to sign Reading’s Jordan Obita according to a report from The Sun.

While the 23-year-old defender is a fan favourite at Reading having come through their academy to become a key player for the side, his future is somewhat in doubt. He only has one year left on his current deal and there are yet to be any contract discussions, though that doesn’t mean that the two parties are unwilling to get round a table and talk things out.

But for Reading’s rivals, they sense a potential bargain. With Obita only having a year left to run on his contract, he could potentially leave the Madejski Stadium on a free next summer and the Royals will certainly not want to lose a key player for nothing in a year time. So four of their Championship rivals are hoping to tempt Reading to sell this summer and could make bids in the next few days.

The teams looking to sign Obita are Birmingham, Middlesbrough, Hull and Fulham with all of these teams looking to be in the chase for promotion next season. This might make Reading more unwilling to sell as they will also be looking to be in that chase after losing in the play-off final last season and they won’t want to strengthen their rivals by selling them one of their key players. But that just makes signing Obita all the more tantalising for the likes of Birmingham and Middlesbrough.
