Birmingham City and Middlesbrough struggle to come to terms on deal for iconic winger

There have been delays in Birmingham City’s deal to sign Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing as the two teams can’t come to terms on a deal according to a report from the Teesside Gazette.

The 32-year-old winger is an icon at Middlesbrough thanks to his two spells at the club. Firstly he was a star player after coming through their academy and stayed with the side until they were relegated from the Premier League. Then he came back for a second spell and helped the Boro get promoted back to the top tier, though he was unable to help them stay there.

But now that Middlesbrough are back in the Sky Bet Championship, they became willing to sell the fan favourite. This is where Birmingham stepped up the mark as they have been looking to add a lot of high-profile signings this summer to show that they are serious about getting promoted from this division. They had already missed out on one former England international when John Terry decided to join their rivals John Terry instead and have now decided to look to another.

Birmingham did seem close to completing the deal to sign Downing as well, with many expecting it to be wrapped up on Wednesday morning with the player himself prepared to head to the West Midlands to finish up the last few details. However there has been delays in the deal as there are still a lot of details they need to confirm. No fee is yet to be agreed between the two clubs and with Downing being reluctant to leave, he isn’t willing to take a pay cut. This has put the deal in doubt as everyone involved try to come to an agreement.
