Wolves set to continue Portuguese influx with Athletico Madrid loanee

Sky Bet Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to continue their summer influx of Portuguese players by adding Diogo Jota, according to respected journalist Tim Nash.

The Championship club appointed former Porto manager Nuno Espírito Santo in May 2017 and since then the West Midlands club have signed two Portuguese players, with Jota set to become the third.

Wolves completed a deal for Ruben Neves from Santo’s former employers early in July for a Championship record fee. The 20-year-old had been heavily linked with an expensive move to Wolves and the transfer was completed as the Portuguese international followed his former manager to sign a five-year deal at Molineux.

Also following Santo to England from Porto was central defender Willy Boly, signing for Wolves on a season-long loan from the Primeira Liga club.

Santo also recently signed Portuguese defender Ruben Vinagre on another season-long loan from Monaco.

The 18-year-old was a part of the Portugal winning Under-17 European Championships squad, beating Spain to win the respected youth tournament last summer. Despite not making an appearance for Monaco, the former Sporting left-back will be invovled with the Wolves’ first-team and under-23 squads.

Following the additions of Neves and Vinagre, Sanito is now looking at bringing Portuguese under-21 international Jota to Molineux.

The 20-year-old is under contract at Athletico Madrid until June 2021, but has spent the last season on-loan at Porto. His eight goals and seven assists in 38 appearances have made the young Portuguese winger a wanted man in Europe, but it appears he will be following Sanito to Molineux on a loan move for next season.
