Sheffield Wednesday get narrow win over Portimonense in Portugal tour opener – Includes video

Sheffield Wednesday kicked off their tour of Portugal by getting a narrow 1-0 win over Portimonense.

The Owls have started to make it an annual tradition that they head to the Algarve in Portugal and they have taken on a number of big teams in the area in the past including the likes of Braga and Sporting Lisbon. They have actually faced Portimonense there before as well, though they lost to them 3-2 last year with Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri getting the goals for the Owls.

But this time Wednesday got the win, narrowly winning 1-0 thanks to a goal in the first half. In the 25th minute Morgan Fox cut the ball back to new signing George Boyd who fooled the defence with a great dummy, teeing the ball up perfectly for Adam Reach who hammered it home from 25 yards. Not only was it great play, with Boyd showing why he has been so highly regarded by fans of his previous clubs, but it was also another great goal by Reach who is starting to make this a trend in pre-season.

But while Wednesday were able to get the win, they were given a tough test by Portimonense. The Portuguese club are riding on a wave of momentum after getting promoted to the Primeira Liga this season and showed why they got into that league at points during the game. Pedro Sa came close when his shot whistled over the bar while Bruno Tabata probably should have done better when he went through on goal with a good ball.

But Wednesday held on and kept their 100% record with this win. Next up for the Owls is another friendly in Portugal, this time against SC Ferense. This will take place tomorrow at 8pm GMT.
