Sunderland keeper looks set for a move to Reading

Vito Mannone looks set to join last year’s play-off finalists Reading. The shot-stopper played nine league games for the Black Cats last season as they were relegated to the Championship.

Reading lost keeper Ali Al-Habsi to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. It is being reported that Sunderland have accepted a £2 million bid for the Italian goalkeeper. However, Mannone has been linked with a return, back to Italy with Genoa showing interest in the player. But nothing has materialised.

Mannone started his career with Atlanta, but he moved to Arsenal in 2006. He played fifteen games for the Gunners. While he was with the North-London club, he went out on loan to Hull in 2010-11 and 2011-12. He signed for Sunderland in 2013 for an undisclosed fee.

Mannone played 36 games in his first season with the Black Cats, and he helped them to finish 14th in the Premier League. However, he found it difficult to get game time in his second season, and Mannone only played ten games. He played eleven games in all competitions last season.

Reading have signed two players so far this season. Pelle Clement was signed from Ajax while Jón Daði Böðvarsson has joined The Royals from Wolves. Reading will look to go one step further this season and win the promotion which alluded them last season.

If Mannone leaves he will be the ninth player to leave the club. Joleon Lescott, Jan Kirchhoff, Sebastian Larsson, Will Buckley, Steven Pienaar, Victor Anichebe, Jordan Pickford and Jermaine Defoe have all left the club. It looks likely that Mannone won’t be part of the Simon Grayson side which will look to win promotion back to the top-flight at the first time of asking.
