Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder could be joining Ligue 1 side

Jordan Veretout could be joining Saint-Étienne according to the Birmingham Mail, however, interest in the player is high.

Veretout started his career with Nantes, and he played 130 times for the club scoring fourteen goals. He joined Villa in 2015 for an undisclosed fee. However, it is thought that the deal was in the region of £7 million. Veretout played 29 times in his first year as Aston Villa, were relegated to the Championship. He spent last season on loan at Saint-Étienne where he played 30 times and scored four goals. He helped the club finish 8th in Ligue 1.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Saint-Étienne manager Óscar García has been in contact with the 24-year-old. While he is trying to persuade the player to relocate, Veretout is not convinced.

Although Saint-Étienne are believed to be favourites to secure Veretout’s signature Spanish side Real Betis are also thought to be interested in the player.

However, Veretout has played in friendlies against Telford and Shrewsbury. Therefore Villa are keen to see if the player can be part of their assault on the Championship. However, it seems unlikely that he will stay at the club due to a number of midfielders already at the club.

So far the Villians have signed John Terry and Sam Johnstone. However, it is likely that more players will come in as the club look to secure promotion back to the Premier League after relegation in 2016. It is also likely that the club will be getting rid of dead wood as they look to win promotion.
