Sunderland set to miss out on signing Premier League winger

Sunderland are set to miss out on signing Bournemouth winger Max Gradel this summer, according to The Mirror.

After a lack of first-team football, it looked as though Gradel would be leaving Bournemouth this summer in order to play more games.  However, the winger has now announced his intention to stay at the Premier League club and fight for his place.  This will not come as good news for Sunderland boss Simon Grayson, who had been interested in signing Gradel this summer.

After a solid 2014-15 season, in which Gradel scored 17 league goals with Saint-Étienne, the winger made a £7 million move to newly-promoted Bournemouth.  However, at the end of August, he tore a cruciate ligament in his knee and was ruled out for around six months.  He ended the season with one goal in 14 appearances.

The following season, Gradel was often not included in Bournemouth’s squad or left on the bench.  He scored once in 11 appearances in all competitions.

Despite his lack of form recently, Gradel has decided to stay at Bournemouth for the coming season.  After scoring in his club’s 2-1 win against Estoril, the winger said: “It is a fresh start because I have come a
long way. I have a good feeling about this season.”

This will come as good news to many Bournemouth fans, who might feel as though Gradel has still not fully shown them what he has to offer.

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has managed Gradel before, during his time as manager of Leeds United.  Signing from Leicester City, the winger scored 25 goals in 78 league games.  18 of these goals came in the 2010-11 Championship season, when Leeds missed out on a play-off spot by only three points.
