Billy Bingham has signed for The Gills on a two-year deal. The defensive midfielder left Crewe at the end of last season.
Bingham started his career with Crystal Palace, however, he never made a first-team appearance for the club. In 2009 the 27-year-old joined Dagenham & Redbridge. He was immediately loaned out to non-league side Sutton United. But Bingham only played twice for Sutton. The Welling born midfielder was then loaned out to Grays Athletic where he played five times.
His breakthrough came in the 2014-15 season. He impressed despite the Daggers’ relegated. His impressive performances earned him a move to Crewe. However, in his first season with the club, he suffered another relegation. Bingham played 23 times for Crewe last season, and he scored one goal as Crewe finished 17th in League Two.
Bingham said this about his move to the Gills “I’m buzzing to be here; I’ve been here on trial for the last week. The boys are great, I’m close to home and I’m delighted because it’s a big club.
“I can’t wait for August the fifth.”
Bingham has become Gillingham’s seventh signing of the summer. So far the Gills have signed Tom Eaves, Alex Lacey, Luke O’Neill, Conor Wilkinson and Gabriel Zakuani.
Gillingham will be looking to improve on last years League One performance where they were in a relegation scrap. So far the club has played Faversham Town, Dartford and Dover in pre-season. They still have to come up against the likes of Ipswich, Colchester and Belgium side Patro Eisden before the season starts.
