Leeds United and Aston Villa target Ollie Watkins is set to join Championship rivals Brentford, having already reportedly agreed a deal to join The Bees from League Two outfit Exeter City, according to GetWestLondon.
The 21-year-old striker has been subject to interest from a total of 5 Championship clubs this summer, but London club Brentford have beaten promotion favourites Aston Villa and Leeds United as well as Bristol City and Jaap Stam’s Reading to the signing of the much-coveted striker.
Watkins bagged 15 goals in 45 appearances for The Grecians last season as the Devon club stormed into the League Two Play-Offs, and thanks to some outstanding performances from Watkins and co, reached the final, where they fell to defeat at the hands of Blackpool.
In yesterday’s official team photo, Watkins was notable in his absence, and the lack of the 21-year-old’s presence sparked rumours that he could well be on his way out of the club.
Now the fears of Exeter fans appear to have been confirmed, as the former Weston-Super-Mare loanee agrees a deal to join Championship side Brentford, with the deal set to be completed sometime this week.
This will be Brentford’s 5th signing of the summer, having already added highly-rated French striker Neal Maupay to the ranks at Griffin Park, as well as Luke Daniels, Henrik Dalsgaard and talented midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo.
The signing of Watkins represents a major coup for Dean Smith’s men, as well as a statement of intent ahead of an interesting season for The Bees, who will be looking to better last season’s top half finish.
