Barnsley have signed Ike Ugbo on loan from Chelsea for the season as confirmed by the club website.
While the 18-year-old striker has never played a professional game in his career yet, he is already being tipped for big things. He is very highly rated by the coaching staff at Chelsea and teams were clamouring for his signature this summer when it became apparent that he would be sent out on loan. Leeds United, Wolves and Bristol City were all interested in signing Ugbo with the latter already having great success in signing Chelsea youngsters in the past after bringing in Tammy Abraham last season.
But while Ugbo had the chance to join one of those teams, he has elected to sign for Barnsley on loan for the rest of the season. The Tykes have had a good record for bringing through their own youngsters in recent years and will now have a player tipped for big things in the future. Now Ugbo will just have to show why so many think so highly of him.
After the signing of Ugbo was completed, his new head coach Paul Heckingbottom said: “We’re really pleased at being able to bring one of the brightest young strikers out there to Oakwell and of course we must thank Chelsea for allowing us to do so. I am really excited about what Ike can bring to the team. He is a forward who has pace, height, strength and power as well as a keen eye for goal as is shown by his record. He fits into the mould of players that we’re looking for; someone who wants to better themselves and further their career so we are more than happy that he has chosen to continue that development with us.”
