Leeds United and Sunderland are set to make swoop for Aston Villa’s Tommy Elphick according to a report from the Birmingham Mail.
When Elphick was brought into Aston Villa last summer from Bournemouth, he was expected to be a big player for the club. He was named as the club captain by then head coach Roberto Di Matteo and started the first few games of the season. However with the club getting off to a poor start, he ended up losing his place in the first team and would struggle to get first team appearances for the rest of the season.
And it seems more unlikely that he will get a first team place this season. Villa have made the marquee signing of John Terry and he is sure to start after being named as their club captain, meaning Elphick is now further away from the first team. This is why he may be set to leave as he will want to get back to playing regular football and while their West Midlands rivals Birmingham City have been interested, two other Sky Bet Championship teams have become interested in him.
Both Leeds and Sunderland want to get promoted this year and know they need to strengthen their defences if they want that to happen. Both teams do need another centre back Kyle Bartley didn’t sign permanently for Leeds while Sunderland look certain to lose Lamine Kone. And with Elphick being a proven player in this division, he could be a great addition to either squad.
