Season Preview: The Championship

Ipswich Town Ipswich

The Odds – (Via-William Hill)

League Winners: 20/1

Promotion: 8/1

Relegation: 12/1

The Background

9th place and clear solidarity was what Tractorboys fans clearly wanted to see. David McGoldrick enjoyed a fantastic season as well as left-back Aaron Cresswell. After just missing out on the play-offs, Mick McCarthy’s men will go into the upcoming season full of momentum in an attempt to capture that seemingly elusive play-off spot. Being only four points adrift last term was no doubt frustrating for many Ipswich fans but signalled intent.

The Transfers

Two big transfers in are Cameron Stewart from Hull City and Jonathan Parr from Crystal Palace. The two will be vital in the upcoming season and the Premier League quality they possess will certainly capture fans’ attention. Stewart’s impressive qualities down the wing will mean that the strikers receive good service whereas Parr fills a spot left vacant by Aaron Cresswell, whose departure to West Ham for £3.75 million was completed over a week ago. Goalkeeper Scott Loach also has left for Rotherham and Carlos Edwards has gone to Millwall.

The Star Man

“David McGoaldrick” is what he was known as by some fans after last season and rightly so. The striker managed 14 goals in the league and 16 in all competitions. He was unavailable for the last few months of Town’s season and was arguably the difference between them and the play-offs. The upcoming season is an incredibly important one for the striker and his goals will make or break what could be the all-important year for Ipswich Town.

The Gaffer

Mick McCarthy has enjoyed a long managerial career thus far managing Wolves, Milwall, Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland. His experience, tactical nous and knowledge of the market is often strong and last season lead Ipswich to a credible record of 18 wins, 14 draws and 14 losses. McCarthy will be keen to improve on the solid platform he made last season. Home soil was a big positive with his side only losing five times at home. The solidity of Portman Road will most certainly be something to build on for next season.

The Fan- Mike Dove

Thoughts on last season
Mick did an amazing job with the same squad who had been bottom the league. Showed why he is such a great manager at championship level. Turned them into a very good side who almost made the play offs. He has bought a huge amount of hope back to the club!
Hopes for this season
I truly believe we can make the play offs & maybe even better.
Fears for this season
Losing any major players to injury or being sold. Losing Didzy last season to injury probably cost us a play off place.
Player to look out for
Cameron Stewart. Looks a great prospect. Played brilliant against us last year for Charlton.
Rate your Manager out of 10
I’d like to say 10 because he’s worked wonders & has been the best thing since George Burley but realistically a solid 8 with more to come!
Best away day?
Norwich for sure, great to have the derby back & show who is the best side in East Anglia after a blip of a couple of years, which have Norwich false hope about the pecking order! Also, Brighton not far off, a great away day.
Finish for this season?
I reckon a 5th place finish.
Fantastic season for Mick McCarthy
Fantastic season for Mick McCarthy

The Verdict? 11th.
