The Background

Last season involved scares, panic and relief in the end for Charlton. An 18th place finish looked like it would be considerably lower for long periods of the campaign for the London club who struggled for survival. Marvin Sordell and Yann Kermorgant finished joint top scorers, with one being a loanee and the other leaving in January, and the outlook at that point began to look bleak for The Addicks. The arrival of young midfielder Diego Poyet helped the cause with his play-making brilliance and eye for a pass, something which contributed to help the club survive with a series of positive performances towards the end of the season.

The Transfers

Igor Vetokele joins up from Copenhagen as well as young Zak Ansah from Premier League giants Arsenal. Midfielder Franck Moussa joins from Coventry City as well after enjoying a solid season in League 1 for the club. Departures at the club sawmidfielder Diego Point move to West Ham United and defender Dorian Dervite to Bolton Wanderers. Winger Danny Green left for MK Dons while goalkeeper Ben Hamer went to now Premier League Leicester City as well. A number of other players left the club as well in a huge reshaping of the squad.

The Star Man

If either of Simon Church or Reza Ghoochannejhad are on form up-front for the club, then their partnership may be key for The Addicks. Church, who was previously at Reading has excellent technical ability although goals were limited for the striker this season. Ghoochannejhad may be brimming with confidence after an enjoyable World Cup for Iran, scoring against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final group game. If either striker comes back on form, Charlton may have much to look forward to.

The Gaffer

Bob Peeters: the Belgian is not well known in the UK and the manager has previously spent time at Cercle Brugge, Gent and Wassland-Beveren. During his playing career he was at Millwall for a spell in 2003 through to 2005. The manager’s first term in charge of the Addicks will be an interesting one for many fans.

The Verdict? 18th.
