Portsmouth complete signing of Ipswich Town striker

Last season’s Sky Bet League Two champions Portsmouth have signed Brett Pitman from Championship side Ipswich Town.

Pitman first moved to Portman Road in 2015, joining from Bournemouth alongside Ryan Fraser (who came on-loan), and finished as the Tractory Boys’ top-scorer in his debut campaign under Mick McCarthy.

But last season the 29-year-old front-man could not recreate his successes, netting just four times from fourteen starts for the East Anglian side, and following his disappointing performances he has now moved to newly promoted League One side Portsmouth.

The former Bournemouth striker spent three spells with the Cherries and also had a three-year spell with Bristol City prior to joining the Blues.

Pitman now departs Portman Road alongside Kieffer Moore and Josh Emmanuel. However Moore and Emmanuel depart on season-long loan deals at Rotherham,

Speaking after signing for Portsmouth, Pitman spoke of his ambition to succeed with Pompey.

“Coming back to the south coast is nice and this is a big club, so it’s something I’m really looking forward to.

“I had a good chat with the manager at Ipswich and we both decided that it was time for me to move on.

“But I don’t see this as a drop down – I see it as an opportunity to push on and hopefully get promoted again.

“When I went back to Bournemouth I signed a three-year contract and we were in League One, but when I left they were in the Premier League – who’s to say that can’t happen again?

“This is too big a club for League Two and arguably it’s too big for League One, so our collective aim has to be to go up to the next level.

“I spoke to the manager – and he’s been successful in this division before – and he sold the project to me.

“I’ve never set a target and I won’t this season, but I’ll try to score as many goals as I possibly can.”
