Sunderland complete a double signing

Sunderland have signed Aiden McGeady and James Vaughan from Everton and Bury. McGeady has signed a three-year deal at the club while Vaughan has signed a two-year deal with The Black Cats.

The pair becomes Sunderland’s first permanent signings of the summer. Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning both came in on loan from Everton last week.

McGeady started his career with Celtic and played 185 times for The Hoops. After a six-year spell with Celtic McGeady went to Russian side Spartak Moscow for £9.5 Million. In his first season with Spartak Moscow, he scored three goals. McGeady scored thirteen goals in four seasons for Spartak Moscow.

After expressing his desire to leave Russia, the 31-year-old signed for Everton for an undisclosed fee. However, he failed to make his mark with The Toffees and last season he was shipped out on loan to Preston where he impressed.

Simon Grayson said this about the Republic of Ireland international ” His career speaks volume. He was excellent at Preston last season and he’s an exceptional player. Aiden has the pace to carry us up the pitch and he’ll excite the supporters.”

Vaughan was with Everton for seven years and he scored seven goals in 47 games for The Toffees. While he was with Everton he spent time away on loan at Derby, Leicester and Crystal Palace. He moved to Norwich in 2011 but he failed to impress. After a successful loan spell with Huddersfield, he signed for The Terriers on a permanent basis in 2013.

He signed for Birmingham in 2016 after a loan spell with them. However, he was frustrated by his lack of first-team involvement in the second half of 2015–16 season, and when he wasn’t getting game time at the start of the 2016-17 season he left Birmingham for Bury. He scored 24 goals for Bury and he was pivotal in The Shakers staying up.

Sunderland gaffer Simon Grayson said this about Vaughan ” James has a lot of experience and he scored a lot of goals last year. He’s a player who will come into the squad and give us something different because I think we’re missing a striker with a physical presence.”

He added, ” He’s mobile, he knows where the goal is and he fits in with the ethos that we’re trying to bring into Sunderland.”

The 2017-18 campaign will be an important one for the Black Cats as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
