Wigan Athletic have signed Christian Walton on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion for the season as confirmed by the club website.
While the 21-year-old goalkeeper is highly rated at Brighton, his chances in the first team were set to be limited following the Seagulls promotion to the Premier League. Any sort of chance that he had of becoming the number one when David Stockdale shockingly left to join Birmingham City were gone as soon as they broke the bank to bring Matthew Ryan to the club.
But Walton will get to play regular first team football this season after he signed a loan deal with Wigan which will keep him at the DW Stadium for the next year. The Latics lost Matt Gilks following their relegation from the Sky Bet Championship this season and they needed someone who could step in between the sticks for them as they looked to get back into the second tier. Now Walton will get that opportunity and will hope to prove why he has been so highly rated.
Following the signing of Walton, his new head coach Paul Cook said: “Following the departure of Matt Gilks it was clear we needed reinforcements in this area and Christian is one that we were keen to target,”
“’He had good experience in League Two and League One last season and has the potential to develop into a top goalkeeper.”
Walton could make his debut for Wigan on Saturday when they take Liverpool on in a pre-season friendly.
