Cowley explains importance of Lincoln’s ‘valuable’ training camp

Speaking to the Lincolnshire Echo, Lincoln City manager Danny Cowley has stated how key their warm weather training camp in Portugal will be. He is adamant that is will be a ‘valuable’ experience for a number of reasons.

The Vanarama National League champions shall face two opponents during their time overseas, one of which is against the B side from Portuguese giants Benfica. Another unnamed English club will also provide opposition. League Two rival Chesterfield recently played Benifca B, drawing 0-0. Lincoln began their pre-season campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Lincoln United at the weekend.

Cowley, who has been at the helm at Sincil Bank for just one season, is looking forward to getting away and working the team hard,

“We’ve got two good games, two very contrasting games.

“It will be valuable time together for the squad. There’s a lot to work on in terms of our organisation and video analysis.”

Speaking specifically on the Benfica match, he did reveal he was unsure as to the actual squad he would face. Nevertheless, he is expecting a tough test after a technically talented group of players,

“We’re not sure exactly what sort of squad they (Benfica) are going to field.

“But it will be a strong one, no doubt, and they’ll be very good technically.”

When returning from their trip, the Imps face three more pre-season clashes before getting their Sky Bet League Two campaign underway. All of these are at home, all against League One opposition. Peterborough United, Oxford United and Walsall all provide the opposition.
