Middlesbrough make improved £4.5m offer for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper

Middlesbrough have made an improved £4.5m offer to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Keiren Westwood according to a report from the Northern Echo.

Westwood has been a star player for the Owls ever since he moved to the club back in 2014, winning the Player of the Season award in his first year at the club has well as matching the club’s clean sheet record on multiple occasions. It does seem like he wants to stay at the club after marking his third anniversary at the club with a positive tweet, but that isn’t stopping one of Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship rivals from trying to snap him up.

Middlesbrough’s interest in Westwood has been well noted as they first tried to sign him last season before reigniting their interest this summer following the departures of Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes. They made an offer of £3m first but that seemed to rebuffed and with Middlesbrough’s attempts to signing Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow also hitting a dead-end, they have now gone back in for the Republic of Ireland international with an improved offer.

They have made a bid of £4.5m to try and get Wednesday to sell one of their star men. However thanks to the cash reserves that their owner Dejphon Chansiri has, the South Yorkshire club are under no pressure to sell and will likely once again turn this offer away. Both clubs will be fighting for promotion from the Championship next season and the Owls will not want to sell one of their best players to a rival.
