Newcastle United frontman Daryl Murphy could be set for a move back to the Sky Bet Championship, with interest from Sunderland, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Birmingham City, according to the Shields Gazette.
The Irishman started his career at Southend, at the youth ranks there, before moving on to Luton Town to start his professional senior career.
However, the 34-year-old made his name during his time at Ipswich Town, where he had 3 separate successful loan spells, before moving to the club permanently in 2013 on a free transfer from Scottish giants Celtic.
All in all, he scored 67 goals in 217 appearances over his 4 spells at Portman Road, and earned himself a move to Newcastle United last year.
Murphy, however, failed to make an impact at St James’ Park, scoring just 6 goals last campaign, and was out of favour with manager Rafa Benitez, behind Dwight Gayle, Alexander Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez in the pecking order.
With Newcastle’s recent promotion back to the Premier League, it looks even more likely that Murphy won’t be getting much, if any game time, and this has sparked interest from a host of Sky Bet Championship clubs according to the Shields Gazette.
Murphy came out and said last month that manager Rafa Benitez had texted him regarding his future, saying he and the club were going to listen to offers for him.
Newcastle’s arch rivals Sunderland are one of the clubs reportedly interested in bringing the striker in on loan, as they look to bounce straight back into the Premier League following their relegation last season, but Newcastle are more than likely looking for someone to pay a small fee to take Murphy off their hands.
