Costa, Wolves star player to miss the start of the new season

Wolves star player to miss the start of the new season

It has been reported that Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Helder Costa has been ruled out of action for the next three months. Journalist Tim Nash understands that the tricky winger has had to undergo ankle surgery.

Although Wolves have been impressed many with their new recruits, such as starlet Ruben Neves from FC Porto, they already had a star on their books in the form of Costa. News that the 23-year-old is therefore set to be ruled out for the best part of the remainder of the year will serve as a huge blow to new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Portuguese star netted 12 goals in his debut campaign for the club, which was initially on loan from now Ligue 1 champions Monaco. This would become permanent in the January transfer window, which then set a club record fee at the time of £13million.

He would go on to win the Club Player of the Year Award, as Wolves ended the season in 15th place under then manager Paul Lambert. His season was actually cut short by this troublesome injury, meaning he didn’t play again beyond the April 1st home victory against Cardiff City. With that issue seemingly ongoing, he is set to be released from hospital tomorrow. There has yet to be any official club confirmation on this but perhaps that should be the case tomorrow when Costa is out. Wolves do have cover within the squad in terms of players in Costa’s position, but he is a unique talent and one which isn’t necessarily replaceable within Nuno’s quite in-depth group of players.
