Bradford City want to sign former Blackburn Rovers defender

Bradford City boss Stuart McCall wants to sign former Blackburn Rovers defender Gordon Greer, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.

Greer, 36, was one of several players released by Blackburn at the end of last season following their relegation from the Championship.  Now a free agent, he is free to join another club and Bradford City have shown an interest in signing the veteran defender this summer.

Greer began his career with Scottish side Clyde before moving to Blackburn Rovers in 2001.  He played only twice for Rovers’ first team before returning to Scotland with Kilmarnock in 2003.  After 120 appearances, Greer signed for Doncaster Rovers but, due to injuries, played only 17 times in two years before leaving for Swindon Town.

The defender had a solid 2009-10 campaign as Swindon’s captain and earned a move to Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent six years as the club’s captain.  In 2016, after 234 appearances for Brighton, Greer was released and re-signed for Blackburn.

Greer played in 21 Championship games for Rovers last season but could do nothing to prevent their relegation to League One.

Blackburn may now have to face their former defender next season, with Bradford City taking an interest.  Bradford finished 5th in League One last season but lost out to a late goal in the play-off final against Millwall.  The Bantams will be looking to go one better this season and secure promotion to the Championship.

Bradford boss Stuart McCall is believed to be a fan of Greer from his time playing internationally for Scotland.  The defender has played 13 times for his country since making his debut at the relatively old age of 32 in 2013.
