Sheffield Wednesday want Scottish defender on free transfer though Aston Villa looking for fee

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sign Alan Hutton on a free transfer though his current club Aston Villa would want a fee for him according to a report from The Sun.

Reports emerged earlier this week that the Owls were interested in signing Hutton from Aston Villa as they sought out an upgrade on their current right-back Jack Hunt. While the Scottish international has often been criticised for his form since moving to Villa Park, he has actually been one of their better performer since they were relegated to the Sky Bet Championship last season.

And while Hutton said on Instagram that he was happy at Aston Villa and that he didn’t want to leave the club, Wednesday still think they will be able to sign him and are continuing to press forward with the move. But while it seems like Villa may be ok with letting him go, most likely due to them trying to cut down on high wages so they can comply with Financial Fair Play rules, both teams are far apart on the fee that should be paid for the former Tottenham Hotspur man.

Wednesday, who despite their large budget are looking for as many bargains as possible, believe that they should be able to sign Hutton on a free transfer. However Aston Villa are not willing to sell someone who did well for last year on a free and are asking for £1m. With Hutton’s aforementioned high wages that they would presumably match, Wednesday may not be willing to spend money on top to secure his signing.
