5 things we’ve learned from the World Cup so far

fred_croatia10804. Referees make mistakes

Some of them have been excusable, some have been poor and some have been downright unbelievable but there’s no denying that the refereeing so far has been iffy at best. It was really in the spotlight in the first game as Brazil when Fred’s theatrical fall earned the hosts a penalty that won them the game and since then it’s been pretty wayward.

Mexico had two goals in one game wrongly disallowed that at least might not stop them from qualifying, Godin avoided an obvious second yellow against England and there was a poor penalty given to Australia against the Dutch. We expected some poor displays but that’s not to say there hasn’t been some excellent ones like the advantage played for Switzerland’s winner against Ecuador. It’s not been perfect, with flashes of absurdity, but the standard overall has been pretty good.
