Bruce hoping to complete signing of keeper by Sunday

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce is hoping to complete the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone within the next 48 hours according to the club’s official website.

The 24-year-old former England Under-20 international keeper spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park with the player being some way from the Manchester United first team squad.

Johnstone has spent the last nine years with The Red Devils but has failed to make a single first team appearance for the former Premier League champions.

With Johnstone again unlikely to force his way into the side at Old Trafford during the coming season, it has been reported that Villa boss Bruce is desperate to re-sign the player this summer. It has now been revealed that Bruce is hoping to complete the signing of the keeper within the next 48 hours with another loan deal for Johnstone being the most likely outcome.

The keeper made 22 appearances for Villa last season and recorded eight clean sheets as the club recovered from their disastrous start to the campaign. Better things are expected at Villa Park in 2017/2018 and the potential signing of Johnstone could provide the club with a real boost.

The player has enjoyed eight previous loan spells away from Manchester United with Johnstone having represented Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers (twice) and Preston North End (twice) prior to his time with Villa.
