Garry Monk discusses Jonny Howson signing

Earlier today, it was confirmed that Jonny Howson had a completed a move to recently relegated Middlesbrough.

The future of the 29-year-old midfielder had been up in the air since he decided to reject a new contract offer at Norwich City, fuelling speculation that he was on his way out.

But Middlesbrough were never really favourites until the last week. Instead, it seemed that Jonny Howson was on his way to Elland Road to re-sign for boyhood club Leeds United.

The former Norwich City man came through the youth set up at Leeds, and even captained them before moving to the Canaries in 2012.

He has been in East Anglia ever since, but has now completed a deal to move back up north, this time to Teesside.

An experienced midfielder, Howson has Premier League experience, and was even wanted by top flight side Burnley, but has decided that Garry Monk is the manager for him.

Speaking about the signing of Howson, it was clear that the former Leeds United boss was thrilled.

“We’re pleased because we’ve been working hard as a club to bring the right players in,” he said, speaking to the club’s official website.

“I’ve said before that we have a core group who have been working well, and we only want to recruit players in certain areas with certain strengths to enhance that.

“Jonny is a different type of midfielder to what we have and he gives us different options. He has experience and ability, and he’s determined to do well and take this club forward.
