Injury set to rule Norwich midfielder out of entire 2017/18 season

Sky Bet Championship side Norwich City have today confirmed that central midfielder Louis Thompson has suffered a ‘significant injury setback’. The former Swindon Town man was recovering from an Achilles problem, but is now ruled out for a further six months.

It is understood to be a similar Achilles issue which has flared up, meaning the 22-year-old, who last played a first team game in November 2016, won’t return until 2018 at the earliest. This is a blow for Norwich, especially as central midfielder Graham Dorrans has signed for Rangers, and another player in this position, Jonny Howson, is poised to join Middlesbrough.

Sporting Director Stuart Webber says the player may possibly not even get to kick a ball this season,

“Everyone at Norwich City is bitterly disappointed for Louis following this news.

“It is expected Louis will be unavailable for a substantial period, if not the entirety, of this season. However, we will be working with him to ensure he is able to return to fitness at the earliest opportunity.”

Since making the move from Swindon in 2014, Thompson has only managed to play three league and three cup games for the first team. He appeared a few times for the Under-23 side that were participating in the Checkatrade Trophy last season, and also a handful of first team matches too. He last appeared in November 2016 in a home defeat to Leeds United. Since linking up with the Canaries, he was returned to Swindon on loan on three separate occasions. There is every chance he could be returning once fit again to try and improve his match fitness.
