Middlesbrough to increase Derby defender bid after offer rejected

The Mirror understands that Middlesbrough are to lodged an improved bid for Derby County right back Cyrus Christie. An initial offer for the Republic of Ireland international has turned down by the Rams, but Garry Monk is keen to get this deal across the line.

With Spaniard Antonio Barragan, another right back, poised to leave the Riverside Stadium this summer following relegation out of the Premier League, Monk understands the need to strengthen this area of his squad. Chairman Steve Gibson has released funds to Monk to build a side capable of instantly challenging for promotion back into the top flight at the first time of asking.

24-year-old Christie, who has 11 caps for the Irish national team, struggled with injury last season at Derby. He was out of action for three months of the Sky Bet Championship campaign because of a broken ankle, during which he lost his place in the side to Chris Baird. Upon his return, he found himself in and out of the team under Gary Rowett, who had also been appointed manager during his spell out of action. Nevertheless, Derby have signed Andre Wisdom from Liverpool this summer, suggesting that they may be planning for life without Christie.

The former Coventry City youngster has just one-year remaining on his current deal with Derby, and no extension has been suggested, meaning he is quite likely to depart this summer. Derby would surely rather than happen now, rather than risk losing him for nothing 12 months down the line. Middlesbrough will intensify their interest in the coming days.
