Gallagher, Redknapp looks to ex-club Southampton to loan new striker for Birmingham

Redknapp looks to ex-club Southampton to loan new striker for Birmingham

The Birmingham Mail understands that Birmingham City have shortlisted Southampton striker Sam Gallagher as a possible loan signing. Blues boss Harry Redknapp has looked towards his former club to see if a deal can be arranged. He is just one of many names being considered by the St Andrews club this summer.

The 21-year-old made a significant impression in a loan move whilst in the Sky Bet Championship last season with Blackburn Rovers. Although they were ultimately relegated, he would still be one of their more important players. He also demonstrated his versatility by often playing on the wide left, in addition to his more usual striker role. Gallagher is likely to have other clubs at this level keen on a similar deal too.

In fact, Blackburn were keen on taking him back to the club, but the player surely would have reservations about dropping as far down as League One. Although he’d play regularly, he could still command a place in the next league above at the very least. Championship duo Aston Villa and Middlesbrough were also linked with the player too, who has since signed a new long-term deal at St Mary’s. This means that only a loan deal would be entertained by the Saints, who are now managed by Mauricio Pelligrino.

It is clear that Redknapp is definitely keen on bolstering his forward options at St Andrews ahead of the new season. The likes of Jordan Hugill of Preston North End, and even veteran free agent Robbie Keane have been touted for a possible move to the Blues, in addition to now Gallagher.
