Millwall close to completing deal for Leeds United target

Millwall are close to completing a deal to sign Fleetwood Town’s Conor McLaughlin according to a report from Sky Sports.

The 25-year-old defender has been at Fleetwood since 2012 and was a key part of the team in their historic Sky Bet League Two promotion campaign. But he is now coming off the back of what could be argued as his best season yet as the Cod Army surprised everyone by making the Sky Bet League One play-offs, though they would end up losing to Bradford City in the end of season lottery.

And with Fleetwood missing out on what would have been an incredible promotion to the Sky Bet Championship, they appear that they will lose McLaughlin in the next few days. Several teams had been tracking the Northern Ireland international since the summer transfer window opened, including Leeds United, but it the West Yorkshire team have lost that race and it will instead be Millwall who get his signature.

The Lions were the team that would win the play-offs that Fleetwood lost in the semi-finals and now they need to strengthen their squad to make sure that their stay in the Championship isn’t a short one. He hasn’t got the most experience of that league with his time in that division being limited to his short time as a professional with Preston North End after coming through their academy, but his form in the divisions below show that he is ready to take that step up and to prove himself in the second tier.
