Gibson, Tottenham enter the race for in-demand Championship central defender

Tottenham enter the race for in-demand Championship central defender

The Mirror reports that Tottenham Hotspur are pondering a move for in-demand Middlesbrough central defender Ben Gibson. Mauricio Pochettino is prepared to sell Kevin Wimmer, meaning he has a space in this area of his squad for a new recruit.

The Argentinian, who guided Spurs to runners up behind title winners Chelsea last season, is particularly keen to add another English option in this position. Swansea City and England Under-21 international Alfie Mawson is another to be considered too.

Garry Monk, who was appointed to the management job with the Sky Bet Championship club earlier this summer, is understandably keen to keep the player at the Riverside Stadium. Nevertheless, he faces competition from Leicester City, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion for the likely future England international regular.

Gibson, now aged 24, has been on the books of the club since he was 12. His uncle is Steve Gibson, the chairman of the football club. He has an attachment to the Teesside club but also understands the need to play in the Premier League if he truly wishes to attract the attention of national team boss Gareth Southgate. Moving to a Champions League side such as Spurs would definitely raise his profile, but only if he could hold down a regular spot. The transfer saga rumbles on as all clubs begin to settle down for pre-season preparations ahead of the upcoming season. One way or another, Middlesbrough will want to know if they’re able to call upon Gibson as they look to get back into the Premier League at the first attempt following disappointment last season.
