Aston Villa owner takes dig at Birmingham City over John Terry transfer

Aston Villa today announced the signing of former Chelsea and England captain John Terry after weeks of speculation over which Birmingham club he would sign for.

Terry had offers from both Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa and Birmingham City’s Harry Redknapp on the table but chose to sign for the former club as he believes he can win promotion with them this season.  Aston Villa’s official Twitter account announced the news with a bizarre video about John Terry being added into the club’s WhatsApp group.

However, the news was first tweeted by Aston Villa owner Dr. Tony Xia on his personal Twitter account.  He tweeted:

Obviously thrilled with the signing of Terry, Xia could not resist a slight dig at Birmingham City, who Villa beat to the signing of the former England international, suggesting that Aston Villa are Birmingham’s only club.  The Aston Villa fans were also quick to react to their new signing on social media.

Terry was a free agent after his contract with Chelsea expired and had several offers on the table.  It is understood that the defender could have signed for a Premier League side this summer but chose the Championship instead.

After a spell with West Ham United, Terry joined Chelsea at the age of 14 and had been at the club since.  He made 717 appearances for Chelsea and won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, one Champions League title and one Europa League title.  He was captain of the club from 2004 and also had a spell as captain of England.

With so much experience on his side, many are backing Terry to be a success at Aston Villa.  However, he may find the Championship season to be tougher than he first expected.
