Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest set to battle for Rangers star

Sky Bet Championship sides Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest will battle it out to capture the services of Rangers winger Barrie McKay, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

Since falling out with Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha, the 22-year-old has been edging closer to the Ibrox exit door as potential moves to Nottingham Forest or Cardiff have come to light. Caixinha ordered the 22-year-old to train with the under-20 squad last week and was not included in the Europa League qualifier win over Progres Niederkorn on Thursday night. The young winger had the chance to extend his contract with improved terms earlier this year but turned the offer down, now entering the final twelve months on his Ibrox contract.

And it is this lack of security that Championship sides Forest and Cardiff have pounced on, with both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing League campaigns last term. Rangers boss Caixinha has been clearing out the players he does not want and, after Clint Hill, Philippe Senderos, Emerson Hyndman and Jon Toral all departed Ibrox, it appears that McKay may be on his way out too.

Former Rangers boss Mark Warburton is rumoured to be a long-time admirer of the young winger and is keen to take the tricky player to the City Ground. However Warburton faces stiff competition from Cardiff.

Jonny Hayes’ move from Aberdeen to Celtic last month left the Bluebirds disappointed but boss Neil Warnock has now turned his attention to McKay.

The Glasgow Evening Times suggest that a fee of around £750,000 would be sufficient to attain the young winger’s services, with Rangers wanting to cash in before McKay’s contract runs out.
