AFC Wimbledon want to sign Sheffield United’s George Long on loan according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper came through the noted Sheffield United academy which has produced many great players over the last few years. However while he has had spells as the club’s number one, he spent most of last year’s brilliant promotion season watching from the bench. The Blades were able to sign Simon Moore from Cardiff City last summer and he would become the club’s new number one, playing well as they became the Sky Bet League One champions.
But with Long eager to get back to playing regular first team football but United not quite ready to let go of someone they believe still has it to be their number one, a loan deal might end up being best for him. That’s where AFC Wimbledon are hoping to step in and sign him. Last year Wimbledon had former Arsenal trainee James Shea as their number one but decided to release him this summer at the end of his contract. And while Long would only be a short-term solution, he would be the ideal replacement for Shea.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Long has been out on loan. He has played for both Oxford United and Motherwell in temporary loan spells and was able to claim the number one spot after returning from these moves away, so Long may want to go away again to show the Sheffield United coaches what they are missing.
