Colchester United release popular defensive pair

Sky Bet League Two side Colchester United have released George Elokobi and Richard Brindley after not agreeing new terms with the defenders, according to the Colchester Gazette.

The popular 31-year-old defender played 29 times under John McGreal last season but has been unable to agree on the new terms offered by the U’s.

The fan-favourite defender posted on his Instagram account…

The defender found himself with limited first-team opportunities and was sent out on-loan to non-league side Braintree Town during the early part of the season. But the former Wolves defender, who was enduring his second spell with the Essex side, returned in November and helped the U’s as they went on a ten-match unbeaten run as they missed out on the play-offs by a point.

Also leaving the Club after turning down a new contract is Richard Brindley.

The 24-year-old right back stated his reasons for leaving his home of two years on Twitter.

The defender appeared 41 times for the U’s in League Two last season, but departs the club with AFC Wimbledon and Fleetwood Town both after his services.

The U’s have already completed a deal to replace Brindley, however, with right-back Ryan Jackson signing from Gillingham.
