Opinion: Why George Thomas shouldn’t leave Coventry City for the Premier League

July is upon us, meaning a whole host of players’ contracts at various different clubs have expired leaving them without a club.

Leaving the club could be down to one of two things, the club not wanting the player, or the player not wanting the club. Due to Coventry City’s relegation to League Two it is looking like George Thomas is in the latter of those two categories having been offered a deal by The Sky Blues.

Out of all of the players Coventry have offered deals to, Dion Kelly-Evans, Lee Burge, Chris Stokes, Devon Kelly-Evans and Ryan Haynes have all accepted. Only Gael Bigirimana chose to reject, and instead joined Motherwell with fellow City midfielder Andy Rose whom Mark Robins released.

This just leaves Thomas as the only player who’s future isn’t confirmed, that’s not to say he hasn’t had offers. As well as the potential to remain at his boyhood club offers have come in from both Swansea City and Leicester City. The fees are rumoured to be in the region of roughly £500,000 as compensation due to the fact he’s been with the club since the age of 8.

Both of these could be appealing as he plays for the youth squads in Wales, scoring a brace against the Ivory Coast in the Toulon Tournoi. On the other hand he was born in Leicester so may want to work on the doorstep of his home town.

Whilst all of these are potential pull factors, that doesn’t necessarily mean he should make the move. Even if the pay is better and the club offers more security within his contract in the long run it would be the wrong move taking everything into account.
